Team FarSight Foundation Initiatives
Cold but happy blind hikers and guides after a trail.
What We Do
-
Trail Accessibility
We are working on Braille accessible signage, confidence markers, & kiosk information to enable blind hikers to experience the power of nature independently. We are currently working with nonprofits, the US Forest Service, & local business & community leaders to develop a first-of-its-kind inclusive destination trail system in the NC mountains.
-
Guide Dog Gear Development
TFF is developing ergonomically correct gear for guide dog users. Founder Trevor Thomas is drawing on a decade of experience having to make/modify gear for solo trekking with guide dogs in the backcountry, and is working with a prominent NC Family Trust to make this dream come to fruition
-
Hiking Clinics
TFF has taught hundreds of blind & visually impaired people of all ages & skill levels to hike. TFF assists our partners by providing event planning assistance & developing ongoing hiking programs in their local communities. We train staff, volunteers & instructors in the idiosyncrasies of working with blind & visually impaired participants. in backcountry environments.
-
Climbing Clinics
TFF started with a single event with our partners from Catalyst Sports which grew into monthly clinics at our local climbing center in Charlotte, NC. Blind kids practiced their skills at the center and later on actual rock faces outdoors. Like many of our other programs, once the local climbing program became self-sufficient, it was turned over to our partners so they could continue to grow.
-
Adventure Camps
With a NC partner organization, TFF developed a series of overnight summer camps centered around backcountry disciplines for blind & visually impaired young adults. Campers enjoyed whitewater rafting, Zip-lining, and roasting marshmallows around a campfire, building friendships and memories just like their sighted counterparts.
